Sustainable investing: beyond compliance, towards long-term value

Is sustainability simply a regulatory requirement, or can it provide a genuine investment advantage? In an interview with TheWealthNet, Hamid Amoura, Head of Sustainable and Responsible Investment at Mirabaud, shares his perspective on the evolution of sustainable finance, its role in long-term investment decisions and the challenges shaping its future.

Over the past two decades, sustainable finance has evolved from a peripheral consideration into an increasingly important part of investment decision-making. For Hamid Amoura, who joined Mirabaud in 2018 after more than a decade in ESG-related investment roles, this transformation reflects a fundamental shift in how investors assess risks, opportunities and long-term value.

In his interview with TheWealthNet, published in October 2026, Hamid explains why sustainability should be viewed as more than a regulatory or reputational obligation. Climate transition risks, resource scarcity and demographic changes are increasingly relevant to investment decisions, while companies' approaches to environmental and social challenges can offer valuable insights into their governance, operational quality and resilience.

He also discusses the contrasting trajectories of sustainable finance in Europe and the United States. While the topic remains politically contested in the US, Europe's regulatory framework continues to shape its development. Looking ahead to 2027, the proposed revision of the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR) could mark an important step towards greater clarity, consistency and credibility across the industry.

Beyond his professional perspective, Hamid offers a more personal insight into the interests and experiences that have shaped his outlook, from his passion for history and geopolitics to his appreciation of literature and life beyond finance.
